2008 Energy Crossroads Conference - From Vision to Action: Sparking Global Change
The Stanford Energy Crossroads 2008 conference, “From Vision to Action: Sparking Global Change” featured keynotes and panels discussing opportunities for “mainstreaming” clean energy solutions. “From Vision to Action” means going beyond supporting the idea of clean and sustainable energy, which has become widely accepted worldwide. To move the secure and sustainable energy movement forward, we need to focus on turning our ideas into action, results, and progress.
Featured speakers included the CEO of the Alliance for Climate Protection, Cathy Zoi; co-author of the award-winning Break Through, Michael Shellenberger; and representatives from Shell, the National Science Foundation, Walt Disney Imagineering, Climos, Electric Power Research Institute, Kleiner Perkens, the Prince of Morocco, the US-China Cooperation on Clean Energy, The University of California at Berkeley, and Stanford University. Robert Swan, Polar Explorer and Environmental Leader

Robert Swan to speak about his first-hand experiences of global warming at the poles, and his activism in the environmental community. This speech kicks off his three-year voyage around the world, in an effort to raise awareness about the dangers our poles face due to global warming.
The Voyage for Cleaner Energy is a five-year, worldwide lecture series and sailing expedition by Robert Swan and his team at 2041. The purpose of the voyage is to increase awareness about environmental issues related to climate change and inspire young people to lead the way in implementing practical, viable solutions.
The university lectures will consist of:
- Robert’s experiences at the North and South Poles
- The importance of leadership and action as it pertains generally in life, work, and education and specifically to issues like climate change and the development and use of renewable energy
- International dimensions of climate change & environmental protection
- Exchange of ideas with audience about programs and accomplishments at each university
Sustainable Places: Leadership in the Public and Private Sectors
March 4, 2008, 1-4pm, Memorial Auditorium, Stanford University
Sustainability professionals, policy leaders, and Stanford faculty will discuss practical solutions to manage carbon emissions, energy efficiency, and water usage during two panels. Speakers include Christina Page of Yahoo!, Joseph Stagner of Stanford, James Sweeney of Stanford, and Peter Williams of IBM on The Business of Sustainability: Private Sector Leadership, and Felicity Barringer of the NY Times, Mayor Gavin Newsom, Larry Goulder of Stanford GSB, Dian Grueneich of the California Public Utilities Commission, and Mary Nichols of the California Air Resources Board on Regional Sustainability: State and Municipal Leadership.

Cars are the solution,” said the authors as they outlined the global race to build the car of the future. Energy Crossroads was thrilled to bring Vijay back to Stanford following his participation in the 2007 Conference. "Everything’s Cool" Movie Screening and Roundtable Discussion

Director Dan Gold came to Stanford to screen the Sundance hit “Everything’s Cool,” a documentary about the journey of several passionate global warming messengers struggling to speak out in a time of disinformation and educate the American public about global warming. Following the move screening, audience members participated in a roundtable discussion with the film’s director, Daniel Gold, and CEO of the Alliance for Climate Protection, Cathy Zoi. Along with the Stanford Graduate School of Business and the Woods Institute of the Environment, Energy Crossroads co-sponsored the third in a series of three speeches given by Lord Browne at Stanford over the course of 10 years. In the 2007 installment, “Energy and Environment, Ten Years On,” Lord Browne reported the current progress on the five steps that he had announced 10 years earlier: reducing their impact, ramping up research and development, working for joint development opportunities, developing alternative fuels and energy sources, and contributing to the public policy debate surround climate change. Energy Crossroads co-sponsored this talk at the Woods Institute for the Environment’s weekly Energy Seminar. Mr. Agassi, former President of Product and Technology at SAP and member of the Young Global Leaders, discussed his initiative to bring all-electric vehicles to Israel. Mr. Agassi discussed the many infrastructure and technical obstacles to be overcome and the intellectual property that would be claimed by the first country that undertakes it.

The inaugural Energy Crossroads conference brought together prominent thought leaders, including Steven Chu, Director of LBNL, Ralph Cavanagh of NRDC and Former Director of the CIA James Woolsey, to discuss the energy challenge in a series of panels over 3 days. On March 2, Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Thomas Friedman gave the keynote address to a packed auditorium of students and community members.
